On October 24, 2026 it is still a scheduled exam, not an already retired one. Credentials earned before retirement remain active for their ordinary three-year validity period, according to AWS. This distinction matters for someone already prepared: the final appointment window is short, while the underlying skills in network design, routing, segmentation and failure analysis will remain relevant after the exam closes.

The most valuable preparation does not start with memorizing product names. It starts by tracing why a packet takes a path, where a dependency can fail, and how a network team can prove which component caused an incident. An architecture may include VPCs, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPN, DNS resolution and security inspection. Without a coherent route and failure model, adding another managed service only makes the topology harder to operate.

Make an exam decision based on readiness and the actual date

A candidate who already has substantial hybrid networking experience may reasonably use the remaining ANS-C01 window. Someone beginning cloud networking from scratch should not assume that several months of material can be rushed into a late-December appointment without sacrificing understanding. AWS’s official certification page is the authority for the December 31 last testing date and actual booking availability. This article does not predict whether a particular test center or online session will have appointments.

Study materials labelled ANS-C01 can continue teaching networking after the test retires, but they should no longer be marketed as preparation for a newly bookable exam once the deadline passes. A network engineer can instead build a skills plan around real operational scenarios: private and public name resolution, multi-region traffic, controlled connectivity to data centers, service-to-service segmentation and capacity planning. That separates the learning value of archived objectives from a dated assessment transaction.

If an organization needs proof of current job skills, use design reviews and lab results alongside any credential. Ask an engineer to explain why a route was selected, to diagnose an asymmetric path and to show how a failover was exercised. Those observations often reveal more about operational readiness than the ability to recall a diagram from a practice-question bank.

Draw the control plane and data plane separately

A network diagram that connects two VPCs with a line does not explain which prefixes are exchanged, which route table wins, or which firewall inspects return traffic. Draw the intended packet path in both directions. Include source and destination CIDRs, VPC route tables, Transit Gateway route-table associations and propagations, network address translation, and the effective security controls at each hop. Verify the selected route before investigating a supposed application-layer failure.

Transit Gateway simplifies many-to-many connectivity, but centralized connectivity introduces failure domains and route-management responsibilities. Two attachments may exist while the relevant route table lacks a propagation or has a more specific route that sends traffic elsewhere. A design should identify ownership of route changes, how environments are segmented and how exceptions are tested. Route-table drift can become a security problem as well as an availability problem when a supposedly isolated network gains unexpected reachability.

BGP adds another layer of policy. Understand prefixes, AS paths, preference, advertisements and withdrawal behavior without assuming every connected device or service exposes the same controls. In a Direct Connect topology, document whether traffic is using private, public or transit connectivity as applicable, and what should happen when the physical circuit or BGP session fails. An automatic failover design must be tested for both correctness and recovery time; a secondary VPN that exists only on paper is not resilience.

Design hybrid links for the failure that will actually occur

A common hybrid pattern combines a primary dedicated connection with a VPN for contingency. The architecture must consider routing preferences, cryptographic controls, throughput limits, MTU differences and the behavior of applications when the path changes. A backup link carrying a small fraction of normal traffic during testing may collapse under a real outage if capacity was never measured. Monitor link quality and application latency, not merely whether the BGP session is up.

Pay special attention to asymmetric routing when inserting centralized firewalls. The outbound path may cross an inspection appliance while the return path chooses a different attachment or region; stateful firewalls can then drop valid-looking responses. Draw both directions and test representative protocols. Packet captures at the right boundaries and route telemetry can narrow the cause faster than repeatedly changing security groups.

Overlapping address ranges are a frequent migration obstacle. A legacy office network, acquired business and VPC may independently use the same private addresses. ‘Just connect them’ is not a routing strategy. Evaluate renumbering, controlled translation, application proxies or staged service migration according to the business constraints. Every workaround introduces its own operational cost and must be recorded so the next team does not inadvertently reintroduce an overlap.

Know what a private endpoint does—and does not do

Private connectivity to a service is not a blanket authorization grant. An interface endpoint, a private DNS configuration and an IAM policy influence different dimensions of access. Verify that the client resolves the intended name correctly, has a valid network route and holds the data-plane permission the service requires. A DNS misconfiguration can cause apparently random failures where some VPCs reach a private address and others continue using an unexpected public path.

Design endpoint policies and resource policies according to the actual threat model. A workload that can communicate with an endpoint might still lack rights to read a storage object, and that can be a desired denial rather than a network outage. Conversely, an overly permissive identity may retain unintended access through another route. Successful network connection tests and successful application authorization tests should be recorded separately.

For cross-account and multi-region architectures, explain who owns each endpoint, route, resolver and network policy. Shared services can reduce duplicated effort, but they also create blast radius. A change to a central resolver or inspection VPC should have a staging and rollback plan. Keep ownership clear between the networking, platform and security teams.

Treat DNS and observability as first-class design elements

Cloud networking failures are often blamed on routing when the name resolved to the wrong address. Track resolver behavior for private zones, conditional forwarding and on-premises clients. Test with the real source environment, not a developer laptop that uses a different DNS path. During migration, account for TTLs and cached answers; a correct change may not be visible to every client immediately.

Logs and metrics should answer operational questions. VPC Flow Logs can help explain permitted and rejected traffic patterns, but they are not full packet captures and do not by themselves prove what an application did. CloudWatch metrics, connection monitoring, router telemetry and DNS query observations provide complementary evidence. Choose a retention period and access policy consistent with incident response needs. Avoid gathering every possible signal without knowing who will interpret it.

Build an incident drill around one failure at a time: remove a route, disable a VPN tunnel, create a DNS forwarding error in a controlled environment or change a security policy to deny a known flow. Record the symptoms, hypothesis, verification steps and recovery. A candidate who can isolate a network failure methodically is building expertise that remains useful after the ANS-C01 exam ends.

Make the drill measurable before changing anything. Choose a client-to-service flow, record the expected DNS answer, selected route and authentication boundary, then define what successful failover would look like. During the fault, distinguish whether the client cannot resolve the name, cannot reach the intended private address or reaches a service that refuses the request. An alternative route is not a successful recovery if it bypasses required inspection or returns traffic through an asymmetric path. After restoring service, review which telemetry identified the fault earliest and whether an operator could have explained the result without relying on the same person who designed the network.

Security and cost are part of the topology

A route that technically works can still violate security boundaries. Segment environments by data and operational responsibilities; ensure inspection traffic cannot bypass the intended choke point through a peering or backup route. Identify administrative access paths and log changes to routing and firewall rules. When teams share infrastructure, enforce permissions so an application operator cannot silently alter a central transit network.

Measure the data-transfer and attachment consequences of design choices. Multi-region architectures, centralized inspection, NAT and transit routing can create charges beyond the instance cost shown in a diagram. That does not mean the cheapest route should win. It means the architecture must account for expected traffic volumes, resilience needs and operational complexity before declaring a pattern optimal.

Beyond ANS-C01

AWS’s retired assessment will not erase the engineering judgments behind it. An enduring learning plan includes IP addressing and BGP, VPC and Transit Gateway route models, Direct Connect/VPN failure design, DNS, service endpoints, segmentation, monitoring and cost visibility. These topics also support network modernization projects that may have no certification requirement at all.

For someone near exam readiness, check AWS’s official last-test notice and current scheduling options promptly rather than assuming this article guarantees a booking. For everyone else, focus on being able to explain and test a real architecture. The point of advanced networking competence is not to memorize that a service exists; it is to predict how a connection behaves when something important breaks.

Source note: AWS states that ANS-C01’s final testing date is December 31, 2026 and credentials earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period.
