The real decisions are connected: a route can be correct while DNS makes a private endpoint unusable; a VPN tunnel can be healthy while an NSG blocks the application; and a secure design can fail because nobody checked what changes after a gateway outage. The useful preparation method is to trace one request through a real topology and explain which component is responsible at each step. The current AZ-700 exam covers far more than a memorized catalog of networking products.

Begin with the current examination blueprint

Microsoft’s July 27, 2026 skills outline allocates 25–30% to core networking infrastructure, 20–25% to connectivity services, 15–20% to application delivery, 10–15% to private access, and 15–20% to network security. Those are approximate question-weight ranges, not an instruction to study only the largest category. DNS resolution, address planning and effective routes recur across multiple categories, so a candidate who ignores them will struggle even with questions that appear to be about gateways or load balancers.

Build a study ledger with three columns for every objective: the design decision, the observable failure, and the verification signal. For virtual networks and subnets, record overlapping CIDR blocks, reserved addresses, and peering restrictions. For connectivity, distinguish route reachability from tunnel health. For private endpoints, trace the DNS answer all the way to the client. A single documented troubleshooting case teaches more than a long product glossary.

Draw the traffic path before selecting a service

Consider a company with an on-premises office, a central Azure hub network, two spoke applications and a database exposed only through a private endpoint. A user complains that the application works from the hub but not from an office laptop. Before proposing another firewall, draw the packet path: office client, local DNS, VPN or ExpressRoute, gateway, route table, inspection hop, workload subnet, private endpoint and response path. Mark where NAT can change source identity and where asymmetric routing could produce stateful-firewall drops.

The first question is not whether Azure Firewall is more capable than an NSG; it is whether the packet actually reaches that enforcement point. An NSG controls allowed traffic at a subnet or network interface; user-defined routes can change the next hop used by a subnet. The two are not interchangeable: investigate effective route selection, route precedence and forced tunneling before changing an access rule to fix an unexpected path.

Separate DNS success from private network reachability

Private endpoint troubleshooting often begins with a misleading symptom: the hostname resolves, but the application still cannot connect. Check whether the DNS result is the intended private address, not merely whether a record exists. Next verify the client’s DNS forwarding chain, zone links, private resolver placement and any on-premises conditional forwarders. Only after name resolution is correct should you investigate routes, NSG decisions, endpoint approvals and service-specific connection policy.

An apparently healthy private endpoint is not proof that on-premises clients use it. The interaction between private endpoints and DNS determines whether a given client resolves a platform service to the intended private address. Split-horizon DNS can return a public address to one client and a private address to another; record the query source, returned answer, and recursive resolver before concluding that Private Link connectivity is broken.

Choose connectivity from actual operational requirements

Site-to-site VPN, point-to-site VPN, ExpressRoute and Virtual WAN solve different problems. A branch-to-hub site-to-site tunnel is not a substitute for device-level point-to-site access by a roaming administrator. ExpressRoute provides private connectivity, but it does not automatically encrypt every flow or eliminate the need for redundancy. Virtual WAN adds managed hub and routing capabilities that may matter at scale, but may be unnecessary for a small topology.

When comparing designs, write down throughput, failure domains, cross-region routing, overlapping address constraints, administrative ownership and the expected recovery behavior. Test a simulated failure: which tunnel or gateway takes over, which routes are withdrawn, and what can users see while convergence occurs? Avoid promises of uninterrupted connectivity. State what the configuration is expected to do, and which telemetry would prove that it did so.

Diagnose application delivery layer by layer

Azure Load Balancer, Application Gateway, Front Door and Traffic Manager have different traffic and health models. Start from protocol and location: is it a regional Layer 4 flow, a web request requiring Layer 7 routing, global application entry, or DNS-based distribution? Next identify the origin, backend health criteria, TLS termination point and any private connectivity constraint. A design answer that ignores where TLS is terminated may silently weaken application security.

In a lab, create two healthy backends and one deliberately unhealthy backend. Record how the configured probe sees each, then change only one rule at a time. The objective is not to memorize which product contains a feature; it is to predict whether a client request can reach a healthy workload after a change. Validate from the client side rather than assuming that green control-plane status equals successful service delivery.

Apply security controls at the correct enforcement point

NSGs, Azure Firewall, network virtual appliances and web application firewalls can coexist, but overlapping rules make diagnosis harder unless responsibilities are explicit. Trace both request and return paths and identify which policy decision can deny a flow. A permissive NSG does not override a downstream firewall deny, and a permitted network connection says little about application identity or authorization. Learn to distinguish subnet policy, central inspection and HTTP-specific protections.

For a change request, write a minimal expected-flow table: source, destination, protocol, port, next hop, enforcement point and test method. Include unwanted flows that must remain blocked. Before applying a rule, capture the previous configuration and an approved rollback plan. After the change, test at least one allowed and one denied case, and check diagnostic logs rather than treating success from one workstation as global evidence.

Make a small, reproducible AZ-700 practice project

A strong study exercise needs only a hub, one spoke, a test workload, a private DNS scenario and controlled routing changes. Use least-privilege permissions and a budget alert. Draw the intended route and DNS response first, configure in a disposable environment, record actual effective routes, then intentionally create a wrong DNS forwarder or UDR. Fix one fault, prove the before-and-after behavior and delete lab resources. Do not copy production route tables into a test tenant without reviewing subscriptions, address ranges and network ownership.

Use the result as a compact decision journal. For each failure, note the symptom, falsifiable hypothesis, diagnostic check, correction and what remained unverified. Near exam day, practice selecting the smallest justified change from several plausible answers. That approach respects the exam’s breadth without rewriting specialist articles about hub-and-spoke architecture, hybrid links and private endpoints inside a general preparation guide.

The AZ-700 exam is easiest to misunderstand when every Azure networking service is studied as an isolated definition.
